Cassie Premo Steele
Born: April 13, 1967
Detroit, MI
CASSIE PREMO STEELE, Ph.D. is an award-winning poet and writer who lives in Columbia, South Carolina. She is the author of four books: Moon Days, Ash Tree Publishing, 1999; We Heal From Memory, Palgrave, 2000; Ruin, Finishing Line Press, 2004; and My Peace, WordClay, 2008. She has also published hundreds of poems, essays and stories on the themes of mothering, nature, and the healing of our bodies and spirits through creativity.
Dr. Premo Steele has taught in university and community settings for over a decade. Whether discussing feminist theory or or the best way to write a poem, she is a gifted and nurturing teacher who truly has the best interests of her students at heart. Currently she teaches courses in Ecofeminism and Ecopoetry at the University of South Carolina's Green Learning Center.
Her current work focuses on the connections between poetry and the environment. She has several poems on this theme forthcoming in anthologies and journals, including:
The poems, "A Gardener" and "What I Want to Tell You about the Rain" are forthcoming in The Petigru Review, published by the South Carolina Writers Workshop and available in Fall 2008.
The poem, "How the Rose Works" is forthcoming in Serenity Prayers, edited by June Cotner and available in Spring 2009 from Andrews McMeel Publishing.
The poems, “There is a worship” and “5 questions" will be forthcoming in Pocket Thoughts, edited by June Cotner and published by Harper San Francisco.
“Penciling It In,” an essay, will appear in Women Writing on Family: Writing, Publishing, and Teaching Tips by US Women Writers, edited by Carol Smallwood.
The essays, “Dragonflies Singing” and “Children of Athena,” will appear in Milestones for American Women: Our Defining Passages, edited by Cynthia Brackett-Vincent and Carol Smallwood.
